Theodora of Byzantium
Theodora of Byzantium rose from humble origins in Constantinople to become one of the most powerful and influential women of the Eastern Roman Empire. As the wife of Emperor Justinian, she was a formidable political force, shaping reforms that transformed the rights of women. She adorned herself with opulent jewels of pearls, emeralds and sapphires, using them as symbols of authority and identity.
A regal necklace of natural saltwater pearls and textured yellow gold features three pendants set with a no oil Colombian emerald, a sapphire, and a pink spinel, each encircled by contrasting gemstones. Pear-shaped natural pearls drop from every pendant, while rough diamonds lend a subtle touch of antiquity.
A pair of spectacular chandelier earrings - one with a large oval blue sapphire and the other with a square-cut Colombian emerald - add drama to the parure using mismatched stones which Boghossian does so well.
Eleanor of aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most powerful and influential women of the Middle Ages, uniquely crowned Queen of both France and England. Renowned for her intelligence, political prowess and commanding presence, she played a decisive role in shaping European history. Her style was as formidable as her character, favouring richly adorned garments and magnificent jewels that reflected her authority and sophistication.
A radiant choker features very light yellow pear-shaped diamonds, accented by natural saltwater pearls and vibrant orange sapphires. Half-shaped keshi pearls create a luminous, textured foundation. Matching earrings with a ring complete the ensemble.
Elizabeth I
Queen Elizabeth I transformed adversity into power, becoming one of England’s most iconic monarchs. Charismatic, strategic and fiercely independent, she defined an era of religious stability, maritime triumph and cultural brilliance. Refusing marriage, she declared herself “married to England,” turning jewellery into both political theatre and personal mythology. Pearls became her signature gemstone, while her vast collection of jewels reflected the authority and image-making mastery that shaped the Elizabethan Golden Age.
In this suite, specially carved Tudor roses in agate contrast with vibrant green tsavorites and the grey-green shimmer of eighty-seven abalone pearls, as the beautiful surround to orangy diamonds. A large natural saltwater pearl sways at the tip of the necklace with smaller natural saltwater pearls constructed as a frame throughout the piece. The composition is further enriched by the harmonious arrangement of all stones, together referencing the rich embroidered tapestries of the time.
A majestic sautoir is led by an exceptional 24.42 carat natural conch pearl. Strands of coral and spinel beads intertwine with coral and ruby cabochons and vibrant spinels, while antique gold beads lend refinement and radiance tothe composition.
Catherine the great
Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, was one of history’s most powerful rulers. A visionary patron of the arts and a champion of Enlightenment ideals, she transformed Russian culture while amassing a remarkable collection of jewels. Renowned for her intelligence, charisma and political acumen, she presided over a period of unprecedented territorial expansion and cultural flourishing. Her legacy endures as one of authority, sophistication and imperial grandeur.
Centred on an impressive natural saltwater pearl, the necklace and earrings pair faceted hexagonal moonstones with kite-shaped diamonds through the art of inlay. Inspired by the cold splendour of Russian winters, the suite reflects Catherine’s imperial opulence.
Referencing a rare asymmetrical bowknot diamond necklace commissioned by Catherine and hidden for years in the Kremlin, Boghossian in turn has created its own unique interpretation.
JOSéPHINE
Joséphine was the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and the first Empress of France. Renowned for her elegance, resilience and quiet strength, she played a central role at court, shaping taste and fostering harmony between old aristocracy and the new imperial order. A passionate patron of the arts and jewellery, she popularised refined, neoclassical styles and exquisite gemstone parures. Her legacy is one of grace and influence: a woman who combined softness with determination.
The ensemble inspired by Joséphine at Boghossian is made entirely of hand-carved morganite, sprinkled with sunset tourmaline and imperial topaz in soft blush shades of rose in reference to the name she used in her childhood. The central element of the pendant holds an impressive pear-shaped imperial topaz while the gold back of the necklace, cradling the intricately carved morganite, is particularly striking. Its warm glow provides the perfect counterpoint to the gemstone’s delicate blush tones.
